A bright red sunrise

A muffled gasp can be heard as she plunges the knife into her victim’s body. Warm, moist blood runs down her wrist. Slowly, she pulls the weapon back out and re-sheaths it in her blood-stained coat. The bystander, who was not prepared for such a sight, falls to the ground. A puddle of bright red blood forms around the dying body. A faint, weak whimper can be heard coming from the man’s mouth. His breathing becomes shallow and irregular, until finally he succumbs to his injuries. The woman stands motionless next to him. She does not know why she drew her knife and killed this person. The situation seems unreal to her. She looks around. The street is busy, yet it appears that no one has seen the gruesome scene. The people go about their business, oblivious to the sea of red blood. The woman’s gaze falls one last time on the corpse of the complete stranger, then she turns away. With quick steps, she walks on. The blood on her black coat has dried and is now practically invisible. Soon she is a hundred, then two hundred, and finally five hundred meters from the crime scene. A smile appears on the woman’s lips, her life will go on as if nothing has happened.

At the same time, Kate is preparing dinner in a cramped apartment. The table is set and the four children are waiting for their father. He has worked hard all day to provide for his family, despite his low salary. The children cannot know that their father has just fallen victim to a gruesome murder, a murder without any motive. What will they do when their mother tells them that their father will not be coming home today. When they find out that their father only had to die because no one was willing to help him, because it didn’t matter to the other people.

Then they have a choice. Will they become cold, lifeless individuals who go about their lives and do not notice the world around them. People who think, but do not think critically. People who feel, but do not feel empathy. People who live, but never really live. Or will they become people who care about what is happening in their environment. People who think critically, feel empathy, and take care of others. Because they have learned from this experience that every person is valuable.
